Natural Newborn Essentials

Let’s talk newborn essentials.

You don’t need everything—not the newest gear or the latest trend. What one mama considers a “need” will likely be different than another.

Start with what is most important: you and your baby's health.

Once you have postpartum planned, consider what may support your newborn’s health. This might look like a medicine cabinet stocked with homeopathy and herbs to support your family during potential colic and RSV, or even tools that will help increase your milk supply and simplify your breastfeeding journey.

Maintaining a low-toxic environment for my daughter is my priority, so in addition to my “baseline”, I researched for the “cleanest” products that became part of my newborn’s routine. Aside from the obvious car seat, stroller, etc, below are my newborn essentials—and I mean the absolute essentials, surely I used many other items I relied on.

NEWBORN ESSENTIALS

EMF MITIGATION - Minimizing my newborn’s exposure to EMF is priority to me. Children’s developing bodies are more susceptible to the effects of EMF, and studies have shown that their brains absorb more radiation than adults because of their thinner, developing skulls. We have a Room Harmonizer in every bedroom, along with device chips on air filters, sound machines, and bluetooth devices, and the Better Zzz’s bags under each bed, crib, and carseat.

NON-TOXIC BABY DIAPERING - Baby skin is highly absorbent, so relying on the least-”toxic” diapering products is another priority of mine. Newborn diapers are excessive, and didn’t think I could manage reusable cloth diapers, so I went with Kudos. The Kudos diaper is OEKO-TEX Certified, so their diaper is free of the 100% most harmful chemicals. They aren’t lined with plastic, and the brand focuses on using cotton sourced from U.S. farmers. Save 10% off Kudos with ‘ANGELICA10’.

WATER FILTER - I waited over a week until giving my daughter her first bath, and since, she’s always had a filtered bath/shower to avoid absorbing harmful tap water chemicals. Have you ever looked into what’s lurking in your water? Check out the EWG's Tap Water Database to learn more.

ORGANIC BABY WRAP - A baby wrap was a must for us during the newborn stage. Soft on my newborn’s skin, and comfortable to wear around the house, we spent many contact naps in this position, while also allowing me to get work done around the house.

LOW EMF MONITOR - There are wireless monitors on the market that emit lower EMFs than others, but if you’re looking for a EMF free solution, you may hardwire this camera. Here is a low EMF wireless camera.

BATH / BATH SUPPORT - Self-explanatory, but a must with a newborn.

ORGANIC WASH CLOTHS - Cotton is thought to be the dirtiest crop due to its heavy use of insecticides, using the most dangerous pesticides to human health, which is why I use 100% Organic Cotton towels.

ORGANIC COTTON PAJAMAS - Same reason as the cloths above. Also, nobody told me how many onesies you need during the newborn stage. I found myself “panic ordering” more.

DIMMING SALT LAMP - This was so beneficial during middle of the night blow-outs. It provided a peaceful light, without being too bright.

GOODNIGHT LOTION - Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a role in the growth and development of babies. It also provides other benefits like nutrient absorption, and providing a calming effect on the body.

BABY BALM - While my daughter didn’t experience much diaper rash, she did have a few irritations, so I kept this organic, all-natural balm on hand for her sensitive new-born skin.
